The origins of the herbarium go back to when the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum (Museum Association) was established in 1833. For a long time the collection was cared for by the members of the museum association. In 1920 the museum passed into the possession of the province of Upper Austria. Now employees of the province were responsible for the collection as curators, but since there was no botanist, the collection was cared for mainly by freelancers and by the members of a botanical working group after its establishment at the museum in 1931. Univ.Doz. Dr. Franz Speta (1970 to 2003) and Dipl.Ing. Dr. Martin Pfosser (2003 to present) were the first trained botanists that were active as curators.
Currently additions to the collection are mainly due to purchases, donations and exchanges. The collection holdings are stored exclusively at the Biology Centre of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum.
Currently the following persons work in the area of the botanical collection: Gerald Brandstätter (herbarium manager, care of the botanical database), Gerhard Kleesadl (co-worker in the herbarium), Gabriele Hauer (gardner), Lenka Vanova (data entry, mounting specimens), Norbert Humer (mounting specimens), and Gabriele Hauer (secretary).
At present the editorship of the botany parts of the centre’s journal series Linzer biologische Beiträge (“Linz biological contributions”), Beiträge zur Naturkunde Oberösterreichs (“Contributions to the natural history of Upper Austria”) and Stapfia, as well as the support of the botany working group also fall under the competence of the curator.
