The State Gallery in Linz
Upper Austria’s Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

The State Gallery in Linz takes stock of the latest trends in art and integrates them into the art history of the 20th and 21st centuries. Its rotating exhibitions are focused both on individual artists and on thematic considerations. In the long term the Gallery aims to establish concepts to interlink regional, national and international artistic production.
Photography is an area of special interest at the State Gallery in Linz, which takes pride of place in Austria by being a member of the most extensive international network.
The Gallery puts into practice innovative models of museum work both as regards collections and venues.
The State Gallery in Linz is the only museum in Austria to consistently put on mid-career exhibitions of – notably female – Austrian contemporary
artists.

Areas of special interest

One of the focal points and areas of special interest in the exhibition programme is photography as art. Exemplary exhibitions of works by August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Gregory Crewdson, Lois Renner, Boris Becker and the New Topographics were selected and realized not according to media specific considerations but as unquestionably belonging to the context of twentieth and twenty-first century art and as contributions to an ongoing discourse. The prominent role that photography is given in the State Gallery results from the conviction that photography is essential for the conception, production and reception of contemporary art.

On the regional level, the State Gallery has at its disposal the venues of the Photo Museum in Bad Ischl and the Kubin House in Zwickledt; another partner institution is the Margret-Bilger-Galerie in Schlierbach. The exhibition programme here is largely designed to promote region specific contemporary art.

Additionally, the State Gallery functions as the co-organiser of a great number of exhibitions both inside and outside of Austria. Diverse projects on this level include exhibitions realised in collaboration with Fotohof Salzburg, Photographische Sammlung SK-Stiftung Kultur in Cologne and, most recently, with the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson, U.S.A.

The art collections of the State Gallery in Linz

The art collections of the State Gallery in Linz comprise paintings, photographs, sculptures and spatial installations largely in the areas of modern and contemporary art; sets of historical photographs; and twentieth century graphics, which are taken care of by the Graphics Collection.

The State Gallery’s agenda includes on one hand an ongoing expansion of its collections (promotion of the widest possible range of  present-day art linked to Upper Austria) and on the other a continuous scholarly analysis and documentation of its existing holdings.
